Le temps me manquant terriblement pour tenir à jour ce blog, j'ai décidé d'arrêter de m'en occuper. Vous pouvez cependant consulter les diaporamas des différents endroits où j'ai eu la chance de me rendre en cliquant sur les photos défilant à la droite de cette page.

Balade dans Santiago/Walking in Santiago

Après avoir survécu à la grippe chilienne je suis allé marcher un peu plus dans la ville pendant ce long weekend de fête nationale. Et oui ici la fête nationale c'est un évènement très important pour tous et à ne pas manquer! Du jeudi 18 (réellement la date de la fête nationale) jusqu'au dimanche qui suit c'est barbeuck, danse chilienne (appellée Cueca), chicha (alcool national) et drapeau chilien dans tous les coins de la ville. Il paraitrait même que c'est obligatoire d'avoir le drapeau affiché chez soit... Si çà c'est pas du patriotisme... Il faut savoir que la journée il n'y a personne dans les rues basiques pendant cette période et que la majeure partie des gens font des grosses bouffes chez eux où se réunissent dans le parc central de la ville où on lieue toutes les festivités.

After surviving the Chilean flue I went to walk a bit in the city during this long week of national day. Here the national celebrations are quite important for everybody and nobody can miss it. From the 18 (real date of the national day) to the following Sunday it is, barbecue, Chilean danse (called "Cueca"), chicha (national alcohol) and Chilean flag in all part of the city. It seems even than put the national flag is compulsory for each habitation... You have to know that in the day there is nobody in the basic streets and that the majority of people are at home eating a lot or in the central park of the city where all the activities take place.

En tant que forestier je n'ai pas pu m'empècher d'aller visiter un lieu qui attirait mon attention sur la carte: "Parque Forestal). En fait c'est pas si forestier que çà mais on trouve tout de même certains trucs intéressants.

As forester I cannot miss a place which catches my attention on the map: "Parque Forestal" (Forest park). In fact it is not so forest but some things have some interests.

Un petit Araucaria tente de faire sa place, mais comme je n'ai pas vu de grand je suppose qu'ils ont un peu du mal à se faire au climat de Santiago.

A small Araucaria tries to live but as I haven't seen big ones I guess they have some difficulties to adapt to the local climate.

Le soir je suis aller faire un tour au parc central (O'Higgins) pour voir un peu à quoi ressemble LE lieu de festivités nationales... Quelques curiosités natioanles:
- "La chicha" a un goût similaire à la sangria ou à la marquisette pour ceux qui connaissent, en apparence on dirait du vin mais l'odeur et le goût sont différents: très sucré et un peu pétillant.
- "La Fonda" est un genre de chapiteau où les gens rentrent, mangent, boivent et dansent.
- "Las empanadas" consistent en une pâte feuillettée garnie de viandes, oignons, olives, raisins secs et oeuf.

In the evening I went to the central park (O'Higgins) to see how does THE place for national celebrations look like. Some national curiosities:
- The "Chicha" has a similar taste to the one of Sangria but there is no peace of fruit in it. It looks like wine but the smell and the taste are different: quite sweet and a pit sparkling.
- The "Fonda" is like a articial big tent where people enter, eat, drink and danse. - The "empanadas" are made with bread, meat, oignons, eggs, olives and dry grapes.

Une colline au milieu de Santiago/ A hill in the center of Santiago

En arrivant à Santiago j'avais remarqué cette petite élévation non loin du centre et j'ai rapidement appris qu'il s'agissait d'un parque métropolitain où les gens vont courir et faire du vélo. Le nom de cette "colline" est "Cerro San Cristobal", et par chance j'habite juste au pied :)

When I arrived in Santiago I noted a small hill near to the center and I quickly learnt that it is a metroplitan park where people go to practice some sport like biking, hiking, running... This hill is called "Cerro San Cristobal", and by luck I am living just at its foot :)

"Pépé" rappellez vous le gars chez qui j'habite m'a un matin prété son vélo pour escalader les 5km de côte et admirer la vue sur la ville (je vous cacherai pas que la vue sur les Andes m'intéresse plus :)). Monter au sommet ne demande pas beaucoup d'effort, rien à voir avec un Galibier mais en tout cas depuis j'essaie de le faire une fois par semaine pour garder la forme :)

"Pépé" my housemate gave me a morning his bike to climb the 5km to the top and admire the view on the city (I prefer personally the view on the Andes:)). Climb to the top is not really difficult, quite different of climbing in the Alps but since this day I try to do it each week to be in good fit.

L'Université/ The University

J'ai été réellement surpris par le pouvoir et la place que prend la "Pontificia Universidad Católica de Santiago du Chili", l'université où je fais mon stage, dans ce pays. Tout d'abord des chiffres sur la partie scolaire:

I have been really surprised by the power and the place taken by the "Pontificia Universidad Católica de Santiago du Chili", the University where I am making my internship, in this country. First here are some figures on the educational part:

- Professeurs et personnel académique/Professors and academic staff: 5500
- Etudiants/Students: 22000
- 120 ans/years d'existence/ of life.
- Nombre de campus/Number of campus: 5 (Superficie totale / Global superficy: 62 ha)
- Nombre de facultés/ Number of faculties: 18

Juste avec ces chiffres on peut dire que l'université n'est pas si grande et qu'elle ressemble juste à n'importe quelle grande université nord-américaine, mais voila...

Only with these figures we can say this University is not so impressive and that it just looks like a big North-American University, but...

La Católica c'est aussi/ The Católica it is also:

- 1 hôpital/hospital
- 1 cinéma/cinema
- 1 théâtre/theater
- 2 chaînes de télévision publiques/ public TV channels
- 1 station de radio publique/ public radio station

- 1 équipe de sport en première division du championnat national dans les sports suivants/ one sport team in first division of national championship in the following sports:

Football
Basketball
Volleyball
Handball
Rugby

Avec un nom pareil, vous pensez sans doute que la Catolica est une Université privée avec un côté religieux important. Même si on peut retrouver une chapelle en plein milieu du campus et qu'une petite partie des fonds de l'université proviendraient du Vatican (rumeur ou pas?), le côté religieux n'est vraiment pas très visible et l'université dispose d'un statut public (10% des fonds viennent de l'Etat Chilien). Le reste des financements proviennent d'entreprises privées, de sponsors et des droits d'inscription des étudiants (~3000 €/an) que heureusement je n'ai pas a payé!
Quant aux équipes de sport, chaine de TV et autres, elles disposent d'autres financements et sont relativement indépendantes de l'université; en fin de compte elles portent plus le nom qu'autre chose.

With this name you must think that the "Catolica" is a private université with an important religious side. Even if you can find a small church in the middle of the campus and that a small part of funding may come from the Vatican (rumor?), the religious side is not so visible and the université has a public statut (10% of the incoming money come from the Chilean State). The following funds come from private enterprises, sponsors and students' registration (~3000€/years) that I fortunatelly don't have to pay! Concerning, TV channels, sport team and all, they have other funds and are finally independant of the university; mostly carrying the name than something else in fact.

1er jour de stage/1st day of Internship

Jeudi 28 Août, premier réveil au Chili, on peut dire que ce n'est pas désagréable de voir la cordillère des Andes enneigée au petit matin! Après un petit déj' Chilien (j'ai l'impression maintenant qu'il n'y a pas de règle pour le petit déj' parce que on peut avoir de tout à manger!) je prends le métro jusqu'à l'Universidad Catolica de Santiago, enfin un de ces campus...
Après avoir tourné un bon moment pour trouver le bâtiment des sciences forestières qui était caché derrière le bâtiment d'agronomie (çà vous rappelle rien??), je découvre mon espace de travail et devinez la vue?
Les Andes bien sûr!

Thursday 28th August, first time I woke up in Chile and we can say it is quite good to see the Andes with snow at the beginning of the day! After a Chilean breakfast (By the way I think there is no rule for the breakfast here as I have had almost everything since the beginning), I took the metro to the "Universidad Catolica de Santiago", more rightly one of its campus...
I have looked for the forestry building some times which was hiden behind the one of agronomy (I think it is always the case). After that I discovered my working space with a nice view!

J'ai ensuite discuté plus en détails de mon stage et d'où j'allais débuter. Je m'exprimerai sur ce sujet plus tard et avec un peu de chance vous apprendrez aussi quelques trucs forestiers (écologie).

I discussed then more in detail my internship topic and from where I will start. I will speak about that later, and with luck you will also learn some forestry (ecology) things by the way :)

Arrivée au Chili/ Arrival in Chile

Mercredi 27 Août 2008, 7h du matin, après 14h d’avion me voila arrivé à Santiago. Le survol de la cordillère des Andes était vraiment sympa même si la lumière était encore faible. La personne chez laquelle je vais rester, on l’appellera de son pseudo « Pépé » par la suite, m’a emmené chez lui pour poser mes affaires avant d’aller faire un tour dans le centre de Santiago.

Wednesday 27th August 2008, 7:00 am, after 14 hours flying I am finnally in Santiago. Flying over the Andes was very nice even if the light was a bit low. The man who's home I will stay, we will call him "Pépé" in the following, conducted me at his home to let my baguages before going to the center of Santiago.

D'autres photos viendront plus tard sur le centre, j'ai encore beaucoup à voir... La journée est passée très vite ce jour là, d'autant plus qu'avec le décalage horaire j'avais envie de dormir de bonne heure. Et puis le lendemain matin j'attaquais déjà mon stage.

Other photos will come later about Santiago, I have still a lot to discover... The days went very fast and even more with the jet-lag. That added to the fact that I started my internship the day after, I went to bed quite early.

Ouverture du blog

Voulant aussi bien partagé ce que je vais vivre ici au Chili avec des amis français qu’étrangers, chaque article de ce blog sera publié en anglais et en français. Veuillez donc m’excuser par avance pour les erreurs d’orthographe et de grammaire dans chacune des langues…
Et oui à force de parler tout sauf français je deviens de plus en plus mauvais dans ma propre langue… Le prix de la mondialisation ? Assez parlé, maintenant place au récit…

Wanting to share what I am living here in Chile with French but also not Frenchies friends, each article will be published in French and English. Please, excuse me in advance for orthographic and/or grammar mistakes in both languages…
A problem of speaking in different languages than French I am becoming each day worst and worst in my native language… The price of globalisation??? Enough words for now, place to the story…
